The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Wednesday cracked down on illegal pubs and bars across the city, days after a teenager, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, fatally knocked down two motorbike-borne software engineers with his Porsche.

However, speaking exclusively to CNN-News18 on Friday, Pune municipal commissioner Rajendra Bhosale said that the action had nothing to do with the crash.

The 17-year-old boy reportedly spent Rs 48,000 within 90 minutes at one of the two pubs — Cosie restaurant and Hotel Blak Club — he visited hours before he rammed his luxury vehicle into the bike, killing 24-year-olds Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta.

“We are not targeting anyone. In fact, I had representation from the association of restaurants and we tried to explain what can be done for better functioning between the corporation and restaurants and pubs,” the municipal commissioner said.

Bhosale revealed that 89 locations were found to be illegal, including pubs, bars, and restaurants. Some of them have been demolished, he added.

“A notice has been issued to some others, and they have been asked to demolish illegal structures themselves. If they don’t, Pune Municipal Corporation will have another mass demolition drive soon,” he said. “We had intended to demolish these a long time back, but couldn’t because our machinery was busy in elections.”

Pune, of late, has seen a rise in pubs and rooftop restaurants in residential areas as the youth population of the city increases due to a burgeoning IT sector and the influx of students.
